Pitching Our Tent in the Land of Hope

Summer at Rydal Hall is rarely predictable. One day brings warm sunshine across the fells; the next, mist drifts through the trees and rain taps steadily on tent canvas. Yet there is a particular beauty in that. Life here teaches us that hope is not dependent on perfect conditions.

The phrase from The Message Bible, (Acts 2:26) “I have pitched my tent in the land of hope,” feels especially fitting at this time of year. With campers arriving on the campsite and tents appearing across the grounds, we are reminded that a tent is an act of trust. You don’t pitch a tent because you know exactly what the weather will do. You pitch it because you have chosen a place to dwell.

Christian hope is much the same.

The heart of the gospel is that God is with us. With us when the clouds gather. With us when life is not always sunny; The good news it is that we are never alone.

Perhaps that is why hope feels so at home in the Lake District. Here, beauty and uncertainty often arrive together. Sunlight and showers can share the same afternoon. Yet through it all, the landscape remains, and so does God.

This summer, whether you are staying on the campsite, visiting for the day, or simply pausing for a moment of quiet, may you find yourself pitching your tent in the land of hope—not because the forecast is perfect, but because God is faithfully present, whatever the weather.
