Rydal Hall Welcomes First Intern as Part of New Christian Leadership Programme

Rydal Hall, the retreat and conference centre for the Diocese of Carlisle, has launched a new internship programme designed to nurture future Christian leaders.

Rydal Hall is the retreat and conference centre for the Diocese of Carlisle. We have launched a new internship programme to nurture future Christian leaders. Interns will play an active role in the daily rhythm of worship. They will lead morning and night prayer services and support the spiritual life of the community. They will also help offer a warm welcome and pastoral support to people on quiet days and retreats. In this way, every visitor can encounter Rydal Hall as a place of rest, renewal, and encounter with God.

Meet Sam, Our First Intern

The first intern to join the internship programme is 18-year-old Sam. He has moved from Ilkley, Yorkshire to spend a year at both Rydal Hall and Grasmere Church. Sam is a keen fell runner. He recently represented England in the Junior Home International race in Snowdonia, where he finished 3rd overall. “Running has always been a big part of my life and my faith,” said Sam. “I feel closer to God on the mountains. I’m really excited to spend this year exploring my vocation, serving others, and growing in prayer.”

Meet Helen

The second intern, Helen, is based mainly at St Mary’s Ambleside. However, she will also be closely involved with us here at Rydal. She grew up in Dorset (in a sweet shop, no less!) and moved north to study Outdoor Leadership. Helen is a qualified mountain leader and paddle sports instructor. Her heart is set on helping people discover God in creation, whether up a craggy ridge or down a winding river. She says, “I’m not yet sure exactly what the future holds, but I know I want to combine my love of the outdoors with my faith to help others experience the same joy and peace I’ve found in the Lake District.”

Mentoring Future Leaders

Rydal Hall’s Chaplain Lawrence Basham says, “Through mentoring, training, and hands-on experience across church, school, and community settings, our interns will develop the skills and confidence to serve both the Church and wider society in the years ahead”.

Finding Shelter In The Sheepfold

Rydal Hall is a little like a sheepfold. As the days grow shorter and mist gathers on the fells, there is space here to find shelter and rest, and simply to let God hold us.
