There is something wonderfully compelling about setting out. Leaving the familiar shore, pushing the boat into the water, and discovering what might lie beyond the next headland.

Drawing inspiration from Arthur Ransome’s much-loved Swallows and Amazons, this two-day Christian retreat explores what adventure, friendship, risk and homecoming might teach us about the life of faith.

The children of Ransome’s story set out for Wild Cat Island carrying maps, provisions and a sense of possibility. Along the way they encounter uncertainty, unexpected friendships and the discovery that the world is larger than they imagined. Their adventures offer us a rich way of thinking about our own journey with God.

Through Scripture, reflection, prayer and generous periods of silence, we will explore what it means to leave the familiar shore, to trust God when the way ahead is uncertain, to make space for encounter, and eventually to return to ordinary life changed by what we have discovered.

This is not a retreat about finding hidden Christian meanings in Swallows and Amazons. Instead, Ransome’s world of boats, islands, maps, weather and adventure will provide a landscape in which to reflect on our own discipleship.

There will be space to walk, rest, read, pray and simply be still. No previous knowledge of Swallows and Amazons is needed, only a willingness to set out.
