A Pilgrimage in Place: The Labyrinth Experience

June 16, 2026

£20

Labyrinths are ancient pathways to prayer and contemplation. Often found in mediaeval cathedrals, they provided inner pilgrimages in small spaces – not least at a time when pilgrimage to the holy land was not possible. Arguably the design of labyrinths reached its zenith in that found in the cathedral at Chartres. An exact replica was made for the Sacred Space Foundation some 35 years ago, and it has travelled to many places of worship since. Rolled out on a lawn, it is some 60 feet across. The pathway is not a maze, with dead ends and confusing turns. There is only one way in and one way out; walking the route several times is possible and if wished. For the event at Rydal Hall on 16th June, it will be spread out on the lawn. Guidance on how to prayerfully walk it will be provided. Each of us longs for a deeper connection with the Beloved, and labyrinths are one of the ways developed over the centuries to encourage that. Come along with and open heart and mind to experience the many gifts of the labyrinth in the especially beautiful and spiritually nurturing location of Rydal Hall. Stephen Wright, who is a trustee and spiritual director at the Sacred Space Foundation, will be on hand to offer support and guidance.
