Introduction to Japanese Papercraft with Artist Pui Lee: The Daruma Doll 

Join professional artist Pui Lee for a full-day, hands-on introduction to Japanese papercraft, inspired by the iconic Daruma doll—a symbol of resilience, perseverance, and good fortune in Japanese culture.
This creative workshop begins with an introduction to the cultural background and symbolism of the Daruma doll, exploring its relevance in Japanese tradition and contemporary practice. Participants will start the day with a short paper-folding (origami) activity, creating a simple Daruma to warm up and build confidence of working with paper.
The main focus of the day will be a guided papercutting project, where you will design and create your own detailed papercut artwork. Whilst the Daruma doll will be the central theme, participants are also welcome to develop their own design inspired by similar themes, such as intention, balance, or personal symbolism. Individual creativity is encouraged, with one-to-one guidance throughout the process.
This workshop is suitable for all levels including beginners. All materials are provided, and you will leave with a finished papercut artwork to take home – a lovely decoration for the home or a special gift for a friend or loved one!

Artist Bio:
Pui Lee is a freelance visual artist based in Gateshead who works in both 2D and 3D artforms using traditional and contemporary methods to create meaningful and beautiful outcomes. Pui Lee is also a regular artist-educator designing and delivering bespoke creative workshops and projects in the community throughout the North of England, including at the renown Yorkshire Sculpture Park. She has exhibited and sold work both nationally and internationally.
