    Gardens and Teashop

The gardens at Rydal Hall were designed by the garden designer, landscape architect and town planner Thomas Hayton Mawson (1861-1933) in 1911.  They represent a unique example of Edwardian gardening set in the breathtaking landscape of the Lake District.  The Italianate terracing includes fine herbaceous borders and lawns set against the imposing architecture of the Hall.

Quiet gardenThe gardens include an informal woodland garden with ponds leading to the restored Summerhouse overlooking the famous Rydal Falls.  Also restored is a 19th century Game Larder and Ice House.  An early 19th century woodland path leads to the Community Vegetable Garden set in the Old Walled Kitchen Garden.  It includes an orchard planted with 30 northern varieties of apple dating back to the 1850's and a plethora of flowers and vegetables growing alongside each other.

The Old School Room Tea Shop

Open every day throughout the year, closing only on Christmas Day.  Open 10am to 5pm for most of the year (earlier closing in winter) we serve a selection of fair trade teas and coffees, hot chocolate as well as a selection of cold drinks and ice creams.  Our delicious home made soup and scones are prepared every morning and we also serve a wide selection of cakes and freshly made sandwiches & paninis.

TeashopWe use locally sourced milk, cheese from Low Sizergh Farm as well as jam and relish from the Hawkshead Relish Company.  With a woodburning stove to keep you warm in the winter and lovely outdoor seating next to Rydal Falls in the summer, it’s the perfect place to refresh before continuing your explorations.

It is thought that the original Tea Shop building was built by Sir Daniel Fleming as a school-room for his sons. Sir Daniel’s accounts show that he employed a tutor for a few weeks or months, then, when his sons had benefited from all his expertise, a new tutor was appointed to teach a different subject. This rotation seems to have served them well, as many of them studied at Oxford and took holy orders. One of his sons, George Fleming, became the Bishop of Carlisle.
